Most locksmiths carry a key machine and a basic transponder cloner. That covers maybe 40% of the vehicles sitting in a Bayside garage. That tells me the battery is dying but hasn't fully quit. Your smart key runs two signals: an active RF broadcast, either 315 or 433 MHz depending on the make, that works from across a parking lot, and a passive transponder chip that only responds within inches of the ring antenna around the ignition barrel. When battery voltage drops below about 2.8V, the active signal dies first. The passive chip still works, but only pressed right against the column where that antenna coil sits. A Bayside resident's Lexus RX had this exact symptom last month. Turned out the CR2025 had been fading for weeks. Licensed through California BSIS (LCO#6792), I program both types daily, and they're fundamentally different systems. A transponder key is a physical blade with a small chip in the head, usually running at 125 kHz. You insert it, turn the ignition, and the ring antenna reads the chip's encrypted ID. If the code matches what's stored in the ECU, fuel and spark are enabled. No battery needed in the key itself. A smart key is active electronics. It broadcasts on 315 or 433 MHz, communicates with multiple LF antennas around the car for proximity detection, and never goes into the ignition. Push-to-start only. Different chips, different tools, different process for each.

EEPROM is a memory chip on your car's immobilizer module that stores every key code the vehicle has ever learned. Standard key programming writes new data to that chip via the vehicle's diagnostic connector. But when all keys are lost on certain platforms, or the stored data gets corrupted, that path fails because the module has nothing to authenticate against. That's when I read the EEPROM directly, wiring a Zed-Bull or Xhorse MINI PROG to the chip on the circuit board. Google Guaranteed on every job, and this is one where that backing matters. Older Toyotas and some Hondas need EEPROM reads more than most, and the process takes 45 minutes to an hour. I won't quote a fast turnaround because rushing this work risks corrupting the module, and that's a mistake you can't undo.

Toyota ran the 4D67 transponder from roughly 2005 through 2015 across the Camry, Corolla, RAV4, and most of the lineup. All 125 kHz passive chips. Around 2015 they moved to the H-chip with DST-AES encryption, which is a significantly harder system to program. BBB A+ rated, and I keep both generations stocked because Bayside has a heavy mix of model years in that garage. On the Honda side, the ID46 (Hitag-2) covered the Civic, Accord, and CR-V from about 2005 to 2014. After that Honda shifted to the ID47 (Hitag-3) with a stronger crypto layer. A RAV4 owner in the Bayside garage last week had a 2016 with the H-chip, and the locksmith he called first didn't carry it. I did.

Same chip, same blade steel, same immobilizer registration. The dealer doesn't have a secret key factory in the back room. They order blanks from the same suppliers, cut on the same type of machine, and program through the same protocol. The difference is they charge $400 or more for a Toyota smart key and make you tow the car to the dealership first. I show up at the Bayside garage with the blank, the chip, and the tools already in hand.
