That's a weak RF signal. Usually the fob's battery contacts are corroded or a trace on the circuit board is cracked. It still works against the column because the immobilizer coil picks up the transponder chip at close range, bypassing the need for a strong radio broadcast. A transponder key has a passive RFID chip in the plastic head. Insert the blade, turn the ignition, and the coil around the cylinder powers the chip long enough to send its code to the ECU. Both systems need professional programming to pair with the immobilizer. EEPROM is a memory chip on your vehicle's immobilizer module that stores every registered key's identity data. Toyota runs three chip generations in East End driveways: the 4C in pre-2005 Corollas and Camrys, the 4D67 in 2005 through 2012 vehicles, and the DST80 (the Toyota H chip) in anything newer. Honda primarily uses the ID46, also called HITAG2, across the Civic, Accord, and CR-V lines, with newer models shifting to HITAG AES encryption. The chip has to match exactly. A 4D67 blank won't register to a 4C system, and a generic ID46 from the wrong supplier can fail frequency validation entirely.
